Taking Your Next Step

Twenty-nine years ago, I felt like I was on the edge of a cliff with nowhere to go but to take a leap of faith. Finally, I decided to take a risk. Truly, I came to the end of myself. I had searched for love in all the wrong places and found rejection, confusion, loneliness and heartache. I had just returned from a two-week vacation in paradise – but quickly, I realized I couldn’t buy peace.

A friend presented me with a challenge. She explained to me that from her perspective, – I believed in Jesus Christ, but I had never really surrendered my whole heart to Him. She said, “Why don’t you try following Jesus – His way – one-hundred percent for three weeks and see what happens? You can always return to this way of life.”

I tried to change myself – making resolutions that ended in defeat. I felt like I was carrying suitcases full of mistakes. Jesus offered me forgiveness and a fresh start. His invitation to me was clear. I walked through Union Station in Toronto and repeatedly read a poster that said,

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” Isaiah 1:18

Jesus used that 3-week challenge to completely change my life. I surrendered one- hundred percent for a complete spiritual renovation. I asked Jesus to be my Lord and I meant it. Where else could I go? He had the words of eternal life! That challenge led into an ongoing 29-year adventure of following Jesus!

Finally, I came to the realization that I needed a Savior.

In his book, One God, One Message (p. 282), Paul Bramsen says it well:

“We began this journey with the observation that our world today has more than ten thousand religious systems. Really, there are only two.

  • There is the system of human achievement that tells you to save yourself.
  • There is the system of divine accomplishment that says you need a Savior.

As long as you are trying to save yourself, any religion or name will do; but once you recognize your need for a Savior, only one name will do. That name is Jesus.

Jesus issues the same invitation He gave to His first disciples: “Come Follow Me.” The initial invitation then continues – He beckons us to continue to follow Him, one step at a time.

Have you ever taken your first step toward Jesus and asked Him to be your Lord and Savior? Is He calling you to take the next step toward Him?
