To Kill the Canadian Evangelical Church…?

By David Arrol Macfarlane

david macfarlane article

What would it take to kill the Canadian evangelical church? Obviously not persecution because history shows that in times of great attack the church gets purified, strengthened and grows underground as it falls to its knees. But what if it were to destroy itself? If somehow the average Canadian Christians could be lulled into apathy and be deceived into believing that the church is meant to be just a social club to meet their needs instead of the instrument of God to change the world with the gospel? If the church can be stopped from reproducing, how long will it continue to exist?

Here is my list of ten things that will surely kill our evangelical churches in Canada with rapidity:

1.       Growing congregations by “stealing believers” from other churches – instead of intentionally working hard to learn how to win people for Christ today and make wins for the Kingdom.

2.       Christian parents abdicating their spiritual leadership in their homes – instead of equipping the parents so the next generation does inherit and follow a vibrant and dynamic faith.

3.       Counting on research, marketing, the latest business strategies and our own strength – instead of seeking God in prayer for His wisdom, guidance and direction.

4.       Make “church” about comfort, entertainment, “consumer Christianity” and like a “social country club for people just like us” – instead of a generous, loving and sacrificial faith community.

5.       Lose credibility in the community by living by the same morals, values and practices as the surrounding culture and even often responding with hate – instead of being salt and light.
