Turning from our Selfish Ways

In Matthew 16:24,25

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If any of you wants to be My follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow Me.  If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it.  But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.”

You must turn from your selfish ways

This is an imperative call – If we want to follow.  Obviously, our response is not our natural inclination because following Jesus requires a deliberate turning away from what is natural.

So,what are our selfish ways?  How we use our time, how we plan our agenda, how we use our money, how we spend our energy, how we choose our vocation, how we exercise our will in every area of our lives…you can fill in the blanks.

To be “selfish” is to prioritize our own interests over the interests of others.  Jesus says, turn from your selfish ways.  Embrace the challenges in your life; don’t let them stop or deter you, and then follow Jesus.

If we decide we are going to embrace God’s challenges or what our “cross” is in this life, and keep our eyes on Jesus and follow Him – we will abandon our selfish ways.  We will leave our selfish ways behind and walk in the opposite direction.  We will feed our spiritual life and starve our flesh.

If we decide that we are going to live life our own way, be our own boss, invite Jesus to join us when it is convenient, then He promises that ultimately, we will lose our life. We will not experience life as God intended and we will not experience the abundant life that He promised us.

The world presents an opposite challenge – do it your way and you will find fulfillment.  If it feels good do it.  Seek your own happiness and fulfillment first.

So, will we live life God’s way?  Will we believe Jesus’ promise?  We will discover the Jesus’ words are true by following Him.  In the old hymn “Like a River Glorious”, the last stanza reads, “ We may trust Him fully, all for us to do - those who trust Him wholly, find Him wholly true.”

Jesus can be trusted but we have to follow Him - His way - to discover that for ourselves.

Will you follow Him?

In Matthew 16:24,25
